Websites
A media center’s Website should be a place where patrons can come and find valuable information pertaining to their school and the media center. The site should contain information that is valuable to students, teachers, and parents. The website should contain links, to valuable websites by grade level, that align to curriculum standards and this should be changed with each grading period. In addition the sites should have a listing of the Media center’s AR books. This will help parents who may want to supplement their child’s reading with books from a public library. One website that I visited recently contained a link to the cataloging system for the media center. This is a valuable resource because teachers could find books from home that they may want to use to teach their lessons. I also believe that the policy and procedure manual for the media center should be posted on this site. The hours for the media center should be posted in plan site for everyone to see. A calendar with all of the important events taken place in the school should also be provided, this will lead teachers to reference the site more often.
The Media Center’s website should appeal to all audiences. The site should be easy to navigate and always have an icon so patrons can go back to the home page. In addition, the site should be well organized and the information should be properly labeled. The sites should be checked regularly, I hate it when I go to a website and click on the links only to find that they are inoperable. A Media Center's website should also contain valuable information. The media center website for one school I visited recently only had a current calendar with no important dates listed.
As a graduate student in the Library media program, I believe that training on building and maintaining a website should be a part of our program. I have no idea how to build a website for the media center; however, I love the idea of having a website that would be a valuable resource for patrons. I feel ill-equipped to really make this happen. I realize that I will have to take the initiative and take classes to learn how to built and maintain a website. I feel that a media center website which contains valuable information is an asset to a school.

I like the idea of having website training in college (although I hate to think about doing MORE than we are now). I too feel ill equipped to create and maintain a webpage. I also like your idea about having a calendar with all the important school dates on it. Currently, I have a calendar, but I only include dates that pertain to the media center directly. Great post.
I agree your ideas concerning the web site in a media center. I believe a web site should be implemented as a user friendly tool for everyone. Everyone could benefit from the use of a web page. Knowing how to navigate a web page to search for information makes the individual technology incline.
Alecia,
I think it is a good idea to have the website linked to the media center catalog like you mentioned the one you saw had. This is great for parents, students and teachers to be able to access the books that are found in the media center from home. It would be helpful to have the media center's AR books listed as well, just like you stated. It would be nice for parents to be able to look up this information from home. I have had several parents ask me for a list of AR books in our library. I also think it is important to have dates for the media center. Great idea to have the policy and procedure manual available on the website as well. I know I have seen some media centers that have the policies and procedures manual listed on their website. It would be easy to find information this way for parents and teachers as well. I think once the website is set up with all of the important information, adding to it and deleting from it, would not be hard to do. Once the website is set up initially, it should be easy to keep up with the website. I like all of your ideas for the media center website.
I liked a lot of your ideas! When I researched for this assignment I didn't see any websites that posted the AR reading list, although I have seen it previously. Also, including a calendar of school events is a great idea. That would enable parents to keep abreast of other activities while on the website.
Since teachers in our district teach units aligned with standards in a particular order, changing the links on the media center website and citing the standards is another good idea.
The use of a homepage button is incredibly important. I have been to a number of websites that forget this vital tool. Is the valuable information you are referring to things like a calendar, catalog, hours, etc? I am just curious.
I think that we all feel a bit ill equiped. The great thing is that we won't be alone. I am sure that when you are ready to build your own web site there will be someone to help guide you and get you started. Just take it one little step at a time. Great web pages are not created over night by first time users.
I have come across some of those web pages that are not up to date or that hold inaccurate information. I would love to learn more about how to design a webpage as part of my media add-on program. Our county has begun to set up individual web pages and it is my hope that I will be able to create a user friendly not too cluttered media center web page.
