Duties of the Media Spec

A teacher approaches you and asks you if you can help him to start up a podcast for his class (something like Radio WilloWeb). How do you respond to the teacher? What is your role? What are the reasons behind how you choose to respond to this teacher?

I would tell the teacher that just making a podcast is a relatively simple thing to do, but creating a space is a little more complex. I will offer to help create a space like Willow Web. My role as the media specialist is to provide media support and podcasting is part of today’s media that kids will enjoy and learn from. After visiting some of the sites we were given, some better than others, I can see the value of using this technology to enhance/enrich the curriculum. I would further suggest offering an in-service to “share the wealth”. Paul

Paul,
Our role as a media specialist is to help teachers with technology. You are correct to say that the way we teach curriculum is changing with new technology and it is important to keep up with the trends. I like your idea for offering workshops to the staff on podcasting. If the teachers are taught the correct way to use podcasts they will be more likely to incorporate it in their lessons. When I took instructional technology this summer, we created staff development power points to teach how to use technology to the teachers. These power points were made so that teachers could use them on their own time. This would be a good way to teach an in-service on podcasting.

Hi Paul,
I agree with your statement on podcasting. In today's schools podcasting is a very important technology tool. This is a good way for students to communicate online. As a media specialist I would offer workshops for teachers too. However, the inservices would not be just for teachers, but for students and parents that are not technology incline. We all need to be updated with the lastest technology on podcasts because it is our future. We certainly do not want to be left behind. When working with students and teachers I want to feel confident to know what I am doing in order to provide techical services to teachers and students.
