School TV News/ Video Distribution

At the school where I volunteer they do use the video Distribution system. The media specialist uses the system to show video’s for certain grade levels at a specific time. For example, last week they had (ADAD) Alcohol and Drug Awareness Conference, during this week they played anti drug video from the media center. The classes could tune in at a certain time to watch the videos. In addition during the big celebration on Friday they had a famous singer to come in and surprise the 4th – 6th graders. Since the younger students were not allowed to attend they broadcasted it to their class rooms. In addition, at times videos will be broadcasted from the media center when it is requested by class room teachers. The media center does not conduct morning announcements over the Television but uses the PA system. Throughout the day the time is displayed on channel four so the whole school is on the same time schedule.

The uses of the video distribution system at the school you volunteer sounds similar to the uses at my elementary school. We conducted a fundraiser for leukemia and the media specialist broadcast a cartoon that detailed the causes, symptoms, and treatment of the disease.

You know that really is a wonderful idea to display the time on the televison screens. Our school clocks display so many different in so many places. Three or four minutes can make a world of difference.

It seems you use your video broadcasting system for a lot of things. To me it is better to have students involved in making the broadcasts because the students will watch their friends on video more closely than an adult. We had students doing the morning announcements at our school in the morning and the students would be quiet and listen. However, when the afternoon announcements came over the intercom, a lot of the students would just sit and talk and completely ignore the announcements. I also think that it's very important to get students involved in technology as much as possibe as that is the wave of the future.

We are having the same type of activities with the counselors scheduling character education videos to be shown at a variety of times and teachers can choose when it will work with their individual schedules. The problem we have experienced this year is when the counselors do not check with us to see what our video schedule looks like. They have sent out times and dates that we are already completely booked . A couple of times this year we have had to scramble to change times or find tv/vcr combos on carts to roll to teachers in order for us to accomodate the counseling videos.
